Australia offers skilled professionals a chance to secure permanent residency (PR) through three main visa subclasses under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program:

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa
  • No sponsorship or nomination required.
  • Based on your skills, qualification, and points.
  • Can live and work anywhere in Australia.
  • Direct Permanent Residency (PR).
  • Invitation depends on occupation demand & points score.

Best for Applicants with high points and occupations on the MLTSSL (Medium & Long-Term Strategic Skills List).

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa
  • Requires State or Territory nomination.
  • Must meet the state’s eligibility criteria (extra requirements like job offers, study, or residency in that state).
  • Adds 5 points to your score.
  • Direct Permanent Residency (PR).
  • Must commit to living and working in the nominating state for at least 2 years.

Best for Applicants with occupations in demand in specific states.

Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
  • Requires State nomination or eligible family sponsorship in a regional area.
  • Adds 15 points to your score.
  • Valid for 5 years, with work and study rights in designated regional areas only.
  • PR pathway after 3 years of meeting income and residency requirements.

Best for Applicants who cannot reach PR cut-off scores directly but are open to regional opportunities.
